O’Brien Stresses Importance of Census Participation
U.S. Census forms are being delivered to households across the nation and prompt participation is essential, says Rep. Dennis O’Brien (R-Philadelphia).
Every 10 years, the federal government conducts a complete accounting of every resident living in the United States. To complete this enormous task, the Census Bureau sends households an application requesting general demographic information.
“Having every resident counted is extremely important,” said O’Brien. “It’s more than just about numbers; it affects representation in Congress and the General Assembly, federal funding, and the need for local services such as schools, daycare centers, senior care, and medical facilities.”
For example, state government decisions about education, health care, job training and business are based on census information about children, the elderly, the unemployed or underemployed. Development of public transportation systems and traffic control are based on where people work and live, information that is gathered in the census.
Local governments, such as counties and cities, also depend upon census information to address their community’s needs, such as building new schools or developing new programs.
“When you receive your census form during the third week in March, take a few minutes to fill it out, and be sure to return it by mail by April 1, National Census Day,” said O’Brien. “I also must note that any information you report on the census is confidential.”
