O’Brien Resolution Declares April as “Autism Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania
3/16/2010

In efforts to help raise awareness of Autism, Rep. Dennis O’Brien (R-Philadelphia) has authored a resolution, which unanimously passed the House today, designating April 2010 as “Autism Awareness Month” and April 2, 2010, as “World Autism Day” in Pennsylvania.

“Autism is a complex disability that requires greater recognition and understanding,” said O’Brien.  “It’s crucial individuals are accurately diagnosed and appropriately treated throughout their lives.”

It is estimated that one in 110 American children have autism.  Considered a developmental disability, autism may result in the impairment of one’s ability to learn, develop healthy interactive behaviors and understand various methods of communication.

Although no cure has yet been found, individuals with autism may be assisted in reaching their greatest potential through accurate early diagnosis as well as appropriate education and intervention.

“My hope is that introducing this resolution raises some awareness on something that affects so many,” said O’Brien.  “Pennsylvania has already taken steps to provide support for individuals with autism and their families via the creation of the Bureau of Autism Services.  I would like to see that type of support continue and grow.”
